Joe Biden Asks Paralyzed Senator to “Stand Up”

Biden had an awkward moment during a rally in Columbia, Mo., Tuesday. At the start of his remarks, he pointed out several state lawmakers in the audience for praise. When he got to Chuck Graham, a state senator from Green Meadows, Biden urged the lawmaker to “stand up Chuck, let ‘em see ya.”

But Graham, who is in a wheelchair, can’t stand up – a fact Biden quickly picked up on.

“God love ya, what am I talking about,” Biden said. “You can tell I’m new,” he quipped, asking the audience to stand up for Graham instead.

Yet another gaffe the media will ignore.

Imagine John McCain or Sarah Palin telling a state senator (who happens to be paralyzed) to “stand up!”

If you think I’m picking on Joe Biden or being unfair, here is another Biden gaffe track:

I’m sure Obama is thrilled.

Biden is showing his stuff I see! He is nothing more than old politics at its worst! I guess he would show the same feelings toward our injury military men and women! Yes the media is in the tank with Obama, well most are!

Biden performed a smooth recovery from an embarassing, unintended faux pas. He has probably had a lot of practice because he doesn’t seem to censor what comes out his mouth. What a concept for a politician! Oh, I’m not voting Democrat. Never have and probably never will, but I can certainly admire the strong point in a candidate.

He would do well to say less.

  4. Jay says:

Oops. (But that was a pretty good recovery.)

Biden is known for gaffs and I think it goes to Obama’s judgment in choosing this VP candidate. Like I’ve heard a couple times, Sarah Palin received more votes for Mayor than Biden got in his entire (extremely short-lived) national presidential campaign.

Biden will be the albatross around Obama’s neck. Period.

This is like that time Bush was making jokes with a reporter about his sunglasses, not realizing he had an eye condition.

In both cases, any backlash about it is just unfounded. Cut these guys some slack; it’s an awkward, public, embarrassing moment, but it really says nothing bad about them.

Wow! what short memories you all have….

are you done belly aching about nothing yet, or do you have a real point to make?

    plantainman:

The mere act of wearing sunglasses does not indicate to the viewer that the person has an eye condition. However, a person in a wheelchair is almost always paralyzed (unless that person is in a hospital).

No, I will not cut anyone slack. I have spent the last 8 years witnessing the words of Republicans / conservatives (mainly Bush’s) magnified, inspected, twisted, distorted, analyzed, and repeated over and over and over. Even recently, the media made such a production out of McCain’s comment that he doesn’t know how many homes he owns. Nevermind the fact that his homes are in Cindy McCain’s name, so technically McCain is “homeless.”

George Allen’s campaign for Virginia’s Senate seat was derailed by the media’s WEEKS of coverage over Allen’s (dumb) use of an obscure slur.

As for his competitor, Webb, who merely published pornography depicting children in sexual situations, the media was much less concerned.

    Guess who won?

Trent Lott made a rather innocent statement about Strom Thurmond. Weeks later, Lott was still uttering “mea maxima culpa” as if he had committed a murder. He lost his Senate leadership role.

    Hans,

Chambliss’s ad on Max Cleland’s voting record has nothing to do with the constant foolish statements Biden and Obama make.

My point, which you missed, is that Joe Biden talks first and thinks later. Hardly someone who should be trusted with running a grocery store, let alone the vice-presidency.

My broader point, however, is that the American media will ignore idiotic statements by Democrats but magnify the most innocent of errros of Republicans. Anyone who denies that is uninformed.

  8. plantainman says:

You’re right, wearing sunglasses doesn’t give it away at all, and I certainly don’t fault Bush for making that gaffe. He did nothing wrong. Then again, clearly Biden did not realize the guy was sitting in a wheelchair. Right?

I also have to say, who cares how many homes McCain owns, or the fact that he doesn’t know. Again, it shows nothing about McCain other than he doesn’t want to provide an inaccurate answer about something he doesn’t really have to know about (as you say – they are in Cindy McCain’s name.)

I think we can agree that these people did nothing wrong. So it amazes me that you would feel justified in doing the same thing you considered to be wrong of the left-leaning media to be doing.

I mean, don’t you feel putting the spotlight in a meaningless and unjustified way like this is low? If so, then why do it?

  9. Hans says:

“most innocent of errors”? you are joking right?! A simple command of the the English Language would be a good start for the “most powerful person in the world”.

yeah Democrats are never made fun of for making gaffs! again you are joking?

huh, “clinging to God & Guns” comes to mind, let alone the latest manufactured controversy of “Lipstick on a Pig”.

McCain shouldn’t know how many homes he has? Are you seriously defending him? Please do tell me how many people there are in this world that do not know how many houses they own? Out of billions of people, there a few handful that rightly do not know how many houses they own. Sad argument, and a sure sign of yet another person without the competence to head the most powerful nation on the planet, oh wait Bush has done a great job of diminishing that reality.

  10. tsfiles says:

    Hans,

I am not sure why you comment on things which you understand so little.

A person whose public speaking skills are not good must therefore not have “a simple command of the the [sic] English language” ? Does that sound logical to you? Using this standard, and knowing the constant verbal errors of Obama and Biden, I guess we can conclude that Obama and Biden do not have “a simple command of the the [sic] English language.”

I did not say that Democrats are “never made fun of for making gaffs [sic].” I will repeat for you the consistent pattern that governs the media:

it will minimize or ignore foolish or incorrect statements by Democrats and liberals but will magnify and promote the most innocent of errors of Republicans. If you can’t accept that the media is dominated by liberals, you are either in severe denial or very uninformed. (Or both.)

With regard to Obama’s comment on those who “cling to God and guns…”, the statement was a major insult half of the American population. We ought not worry about Obama’s elitist contempt for the average American? Absurd.

The “lipstick” issue became an issue because it (inadvertently?) hinted at Sarah Palin’s joke during her RNC acceptance speech. Was Obama insulting Palin or merely resorting to a silly proverb? The broader issue, however, was how unpresidential Obama appeared. You don’t appear too concerned with Obama’s poor choice of words, but you are quick to criticize Republicans.

I already explained the issue about McCain’s homes. (You are very selective about what is important and what isn’t.)

Yes, of course I am seriously defending McCain. (No, I’m pretending. “Hans.”)

A friendly tip for you: childish arrogance and manufactured disbelief at people who hold different ideas and opinions from yours is not a substitute for an argument. If you can’t debate issues in a mature and intelligent manner, and if you don’t understand basic facts, then kindly get the hell away from my blog.
