The Economy Sucks! Let’s Go to a Ball Game!

Listening to this media’s coverage of economic news (in an election year), one might think we’re in the Great Depression. Yes, the economy is certainly lagging and the situation could be better in a number of areas.

And yet, note the priorities of some people. While many complain about prices going up here and there, this doesn’t seem to stop many from dropping a nice chunk of change on attending a professional sporting event.

Gas prices are up. Food prices are up. So, oddly enough, is attendance at Major League Baseball games.

MLB officials say attendance is 2.6 percent ahead of record-breaking figures from last season, when the 30 teams raked in more than $6 billion. The NBA and the NFL also say they see no signs that the economy will cut into attendance or profits.

“People seek the comfort of their sports addiction when there’s bad economic times,” said Andrew Zimbalist, a sports economist. “There’s something very deeply rooted about our sports attachments. People tend to give that up last.”

If you have money to spend on any sporting event, you must have SOME disposable income. Atleast for the many who attend games, this tends to cast doubt on how negative the economic situation truly is.
