Dear Mayor Bates:Berkeley’s treatment of military recruiters is appalling.Is this the tolerance that liberalism claims is among its highest virtues? Is this the manner in which Berkeley expresses disagreement with the U.S. government? By removing the people who, by their very lives, protect the human rights which you so value? Are you aware that the 1960s ended nearly 40 years ago?Your recent comments were also callous. You recently said that, “The actual recruiters–we’re not prepared to apologize to them. We don’t want them here.”Meanwhile, I imagine that Berkeley has no problem accepting funds from the federal government. THAT, Mayor Bates, you will welcome with open arms.You are a shameful group of ingrates,_________________
